A singlespeed bike has only one gear, which means the rider can coast and stop pedaling while the bike is still in motion. On the other hand, a fixie (or fixed-gear) bike has a single gear as well, but the pedals are directly connected to the rear wheel, so the rider cannot coast and must always pedal as long as the bike is moving. This means that on a fixie, the rider has more control over the bike's speed and can use their legs to slow down or stop the bike. **
